Having Wi-Fi Problems? Router 101
A reliable internet connection has been more important than anything now since most of us are working from home. If you are like most people, you connect to the internet at home using a Wi-Fi connection. Since most of your devices – whether they are smartphones, tablets, or laptops – are designed to be used wirelessly, the only way to get online with them is by connecting them to the device that provides the Wi-Fi signal in your home. This device is called a “Router.”
Do not get confused when you hear terms like ‘Gateway,’ ‘Modem’ or an ‘Access Point.’ These are just some other names that routers have. This device has a greater impact on the quality of your internet connection at home.
Do you have the best internet speed package from your provider and still not getting the performance you expect? The first thing you check is whether your router is based on outdated technology. If your files take forever to download, streaming videos are not displaying smoothly, your game is lagging, you experience digitized or poor connection video chats, or you simply have trouble connecting to Wi-Fi in some areas of your home, then there is a high chance an old router is a culprit.
Routers are created with different Specs!
The fact remains all routers are not created equal. That is why you will find routers ranging from $40 to over $500+. If your router is even just a few years old, it can be considered out of date. This just means that you are not getting the most out of the new wireless devices you have invested in., which are simply designed to work best when they are using the latest technologies. This also means you are not getting your money’s worth from your Internet service because your router is preventing you from getting the speed and performance you are paying for.
Modern technology, better performance!
At this point, you would ask why a new router is better. What is the difference? A newer router is based on modern technology (the 802.11ac standard) that offers major performance improvements you will notice when you are online. First, a new router is designed to work faster. The maximum speed provided by routers based on the old standards (802.11b/g/n) is 450 Megabits per second or less. The new routers are capable of providing speeds up to 1330 Megabits per second (or 1.3 Gigabits per second). For example, if you have the old router and have an incredibly good internet plan of (500/500 Mbps), you will not get the best performance that you are paying for.
An up-to-date router is much faster than routers running on old technology. This can make a noticeable difference, especially when you are downloading large files, gaming online, streaming on services like Netflix. This even applies in general when you have multiple devices connected to the same router at the same time.
The router with newer technology gives you a better range, which means you can get a better internet connection being even in the farthest room of your house. A newer router has these capabilities that detect where a device is and then sending a stronger signal in the direction of that device.
